What is Google My Business and do I need it?

Has it been suggested that you get a Google My Business account? Have you seen the Business Profiles of other businesses and wondered how you can get one too?

Google My Business is a free tool that can be used by any business regardless of their business industry or location. It is something I highly recommend having, and as such, I’d love to explain more about what it is, how it works, and the benefits you can receive from using it.

What is Google My Business?

Available for any business regardless of whether they have a physical store, work from home or in a commercial premise, obtaining a Google My Business or GMB account is highly recommended. It’s a free tool that lets you manage the information Google shows others within their search results, called a Business Listing. Plus, by creating a GMB account, you can effectively highlight key information within Google Search and Maps in your Business Listing, including your:

  • Business name
  • Website address
  • Physical or postal address
  • Phone number
  • Opening hours
  • Photos
  • Reviews and your responses
  • Business description
  • Promotion of events and news

As a centralised point for your business’ contact information on Google, your listing is likely to be shown to Google users when they search for a product or service you provide in their local area. This is regardless of whether you have a website or how well it ranks, which results in providing an easy way for customers to contact or learn more about your business.

Creating your Google My Business account is fairly simple. First, you enter the name of your business, then select the business category it best fits in. Next, select if you want your location to appear on Google Maps or not, and list your service areas (if applicable). Finally, add your phone number and website URL. If you don’t have a website, Google can provide you with a free website created from the information you add to your Business Profile.

You will also be asked to complete the verification process to ensure your business information is accurate, which is achieved by Google mailing you a pin code which you enter into your account. Once your account is verified, you will have full access to edit your Business Profile.

Do I Need a Google My Business Listing?

Yes! Besides the fact that it is free, having a GMB listing and associated Business Profile has many benefits, including:

  • Enhancing your business’ local SEO and visibility
  • Generating new leads for your business, as your listing gives them the details they need to contact you
  • Engaging with your customers or clients by responding to their reviews and answering their questions
  • Publishing of posts to share information, news, product details or events
  • Gaining insights into your audience, including search queries, views, location and website clicks
